Arcadia Housing
Wendell Burnette Architects was one of four firms invited to provide a multi-family housing proposal for a prominent site near the revamped neighborhood corner of 40th Street and Campbell. Our preferred Scheme B proposal focused ‘eyes on the street’ to encourage interaction between residents and the burgeoning pedestrian street life developing here, capitalizing on an urban condition that is unfortunately all too uncommon in our city. Custom-designed shade louvers just beyond the private indoor/outdoor terraces would constantly animate the street—changing according to seasons, times of day, and the life within. In both Scheme A & B, three-level units provide a work/live/office option with separate entry from the parking, small semi-public private courtyards at the ground floor, a common living-dining-kitchen that opens onto a terrace at the middle floor with a private room/bath, and a master suite at the top floor with a bypassing access to a roof terrace. Units were also configured together on-site in plan and section to achieve premium views to either Piestewa Peak and Camelback Mountain or the South Mountain and Sierra Estrella Mountain Ranges and the downtown Phoenix skyline (both in Scheme B).
