Bridge House

Scottsdale, Arizona, USA

A long curving site cut / shotcrete wall moves one down and into this north-and northwest-facing desert mountain slope. A series of ratcheted rotations in the plan slowly unfold the distant layered mountain views down the major wash drainage to the west. A series of three perpendicular cantilevered projections and/or bridges shift the frame and the focus with each turn toward the views and alter the perception of the site. Upon arrival by car, one is invited up a slow flight of stairs into a courtyard defined by the site wall and a pair of larger bridges that frame a view of Continental Mountain across a long reflecting pool. The larger bridges are wrapped in veins of paint lock metal similar to stones found on site. The west fun bridge is a giant outstretched hand that blocks the west/northwest summer sun, while telescoping the most distant view into focus. Experientially, all living spaces circulate into one another in a continuous unprescribed flow akin to a Mobius strip through several unexpected devices, such as a pool slide and a master bathtub that extends 100 feet into the distant view.
