Design solution is a direct response to clients’ requests for ‘lots of light’ and ‘privacy from neighbors’. The house plan / house form coupled with its precise placement on the site completes an implied court within the protected Arizona Pine Forest beyond. The public faces of the form are clad in vertical and horizontal wood in fluctuating scale resting on a 27” base of black granite. The 28’-0” high north wall is a canted, multi-faceted plane with one large aperture that frames the forest preserve. The section of the house is a canopy of outstretched arms reaching up to the south light cascading down thru the forest. The roof form is therefore an inverted gable with its valley nearer the south wall at a third point and its high point opening up to the tallest pines to the north. The resulting section admits varying types of light and shadow according to the seasons while variably promoting ventilation at both edges. The living, dining and main bedroom spaces occupy the full height south half of the form. Support spaces are situated below a string of second level guest suites that occupy the north half of the form. Guest suites are connected by a suspended catwalk of translucent glass that terminates into a screened porch of open 1 x 6 boards above the garage, which serves as an auxiliary living space away from TV as well as a slumber space for multiple guests. Kinked plan geometry intentionally opens to the morning summer sun and specifically turns away from the afternoon summer sun.
