WBA was commissioned to design autonomous STR’s with common site amenities on two distinctly different sites in Yucca Valley – (see ‘Process’ tab for Master Plan details). For the Joshua Tree Site we evolved two distinctly different but related concepts of a single repeatable thermally-broken concrete form wherein a roof-cum-wall becomes the primal ‘tent’ with an expansive private / protected prospect bifurcated by two insulated-operable-glass-windscreen planes. In the ‘tent’ the foundation is an elevated pool-code plinth of shotcrete upon redistributed excavation, from which springs a folded concrete plate ‘tent’ upon a foldable-reusable form. The back of the ‘tent’ is configured with two private bathing rooms and an open kitchen that opens in two directions across a large ‘L’ sleeping sofa that opens out onto a partially shaded pool. Arrival is on stabilized-decomposed-granite roads / drives into a vegetal enclosure of shade utilizing repurposed Joshua Tree stalks tied to a rebar enclosure. The Mojave Desert in Yucca Valley can be very hot of course but also extremely windy and very cold at times with periods of snowfall; so, while blocking wind and summer sun is an absolute requirement, so is absorbing and harnessing the sun in winter and shoulder seasons; whilst creating a solitary Mojave Desert experience in the most competitive and saturated STR market in the U.S.
