Muratura 7
7 volumetric masonry tower lofts step back from the street in order to simultaneously frame unobstructed views of the valley floor, its distant mountain ranges including most proximately Camelback Mountain while at the same time opening onto private back yards with front door home office access and ‘eyes on the street’. Each tower loft set within this garden retreat is a walled citadel of solid post-tensioned insulated ‘Integra’ masonry specifically crafted to celebrate the ever-changing light, color and shadow of our native Sonoran Desert. Muratura is an Italian word for masonry. While each facet of the towers are carefully calibrated to maximize the site and views each is also responsive to north and south light, to cross-ventilation, as well as acoustic and visual privacy, all of which create a sense of home, of arrival and of occasion. This 2013 project was designed post-2008 housing crisis to be sold / financed as a ‘fee simple single-family subdivision’ albeit with the max density of a multi-family housing project, while functioning like a small live-work community.
