Nolfi Remodel
A 1950’s Sunnyslope bungalow is walled with client’s new program – Studio / Living Room and Master Bedroom / Dressing / Bath – creating multiple new courtyard spaces between the addition and existing house / site. The existing house abuts a shared driveway on east preserving a much larger trapezoidal side yard that opens to the North Phoenix Mountain Preserve and is well-shaded from harshest west sun by a native desert wash along west property line. The house is setback from the street which has a long gentle arc. To maximize the site’s available building envelope and provide a new ‘front’ a tall masonry screen wall follows the front yard setback ‘arc’ at ground and warps up and outwards from main entry to the maximum ‘building overhang’ allowed within the setback at the outermost SE / SW corners. This creates a dynamic street presence of ever-changing light and shadow as well as providing a self-shading wall which is very beneficial for a south-facing wall in our desert climate. The full height of the wall is returned at each end following side yard setbacks forming a small private bathing court on east and a large indoor / outdoor living room on the west. Each sidewall masonry bed course follows the warped ‘front’ geometry such that no masonry unit is cut. The masonry is a special porous concrete masonry unit with insulative / acoustic properties allowing the wall to perform as a single-stroke solution for the addition’s structure, thermal building envelope, exterior and interior finish.
