RR STR Hilltop Cave

Yucca Valley, California, USA

The Hilltop Cave is a thermally-broken thin-shell / folded-plate concrete form sprung from a partially buried ring / slab foundation. The open side is assisted by a thickened thin-shell-beam-edge, one steel blade column at center-point-convergence-of-two-folded-plates and in concert a full-width-west-facing-steel-plate-window-frame-system for insulated glass windows / pivot doors with custom yucca-tipped perforated fixed / operable shade screens (all hot-dip galvanized) for non-rented security and of course custom seasonally-calibrated-protection from harshest sun and wind. The building envelope is Title 24 compliant. By necessity, the Hilltop’s wildcat access was ‘a deft work of art’ as far as withholding – until the last minute – the most spectacular western view of San Gorgonio (the highest (often snow-capped) peak in SOCAL) with the Mojave Desert Valley floor far below. Also, stunning views south and eastward to the Little San Bernardino and Pinto Mountains of Joshua Tree National Park. Hilltop was by far the most exposed building pad in terms of high velocity diurnal (E-W) winds – at times it’s difficult to stand up. Sadly, the Hilltop was decapitated, so our design approach was to restore its original airfoil profile from three directions while naturally lifting up to auto / pedestrian arrival, the western view, and the earth’s eastern rotation. Due to vehicular turnaround limitations one single 1900SF space is utilized for both vehicle / turntable and the rest for everything else.
