Salt Lake Residence
A resort-like ‘neighborhood house’ for a Utah Family on a 396’ deep 1.36-acre Lot they owned ‘in neighborhood they grew up in’ that could focus eastward to ever-changing Wasatch Foothills and snow-capped Twin Peaks / O’Sullivan Peaks of the Wasatch Mountain Range, all this only visible in perpetuity from deeper back on the Lot. Our proposal was an ‘L’ or ‘Z’ plan with Main Room 1/2 way back with a long ‘south-facing wing for winter sun’ – all configured to capture ‘warmth’ and proximate-to-distant Wasatch Views. Since this southern Salt Lake City Town was within former Lake Bonneville and given ‘project goals’ were to be both ‘Family House’ / ‘Utah Resort’ for Family, entertaining Friends including occasional Dignitaries, our approach was to create a dialogue with the ‘deep context of this place’. At the poplar-lined street entry is a long front porch and beyond a large Salt-Flat-Reflecting-Pool akin to a portion of the Great Salt Lake that would incorporate a heated family pool and at the back Auto Court / Family Arrival is a Courtyard of Quaking Aspen. Floating between these is a clear-spanning-double-height-volume clad in 2B Mill Finish Stainless Steel that reflects the Wasatch Range, the Aspen, and Great Salt Lake, whilst incorporating ground level Main Family / Entertaining Room and above a Private Study (above Entry) with Media Room (above Family) at opposite end with heated 360 Roof Terrace between.
