Sardinia Stazzo

Sardinia, Italy

WBA was commissioned to develop a conceptual Master Plan for a low-impact Agri-Turismo on Sardinia along the Costa Smeralda between Porto Rotondo and Porto Cervo. What drove our concept were the ruins of an existing Stazzo (or farmhouse) that created a protected south-Bay of Cugnana-facing courtyard between Stazzo and forested ridgeline-slope at the base of an iconic Crescent Rock. Its’ additional lesson for the future Agri-Turismo was that if one associates ‘settlement’ only with the finite number of scattered rock outcrops and with the same stone ‘all would recede into the forested ridgeline backdrop’ as did the old Stazzo. After our initial site visit, we strongly encouraged our client to restore and preserve the wise Stazzo as his Villa and as a gift of prophecy. Local requirements logically required we follow exact footprint, local roofline, materials, etc. On the interior, we chose an Italian calcareous limestone ‘grown from the sea’ for all floors and wet walls and recognized latent logic such as the likely private to public (north to south) layout and utilizing a previously immovable boulder (that was part of a wall) as a discreet screen between sink and bathing. All opened out to a south-Bay-facing pool / courtyard within and around a historic lamb-roasting rock at the base of ridgeline-slope and below Crescent Rock. Lastly, existing openings allowed access / views to courtyard, the Bay and the higher southeast / eastern Mountain Ranges.
